Recently the media was agog with different versions of the story of herdsmen attack on a Tiv community in Benue state which led to the death of over 70 people. Killings which were widely described as barbaric and inhuman by many, was not unconnected to the anti grazing bill signed into law by the Benue state Governor Samuel Ortom. The bill which is was passed to put an end to open grazing, did not go down well with the cattle rearers who resorted to such violence to register their displeasure. The herdsmen who have in the past had violent clashes with farmers in the state and other parts of the country demanded for about ten hectares of land for their cattle, a proposition the government considers impossible. Nigeria is not the on country with large herds of cattle. U.S and Canada rank highest in terms of cattle rearing and they have never had any issue of herdsmen farmers clash. This is due to the modern methods of cattle rearing which allow the castles to be properly taken care of without moving them about in the nomadic style. In other to prevent a recurrence of this mayhem the federal government have been advised to adopt the modern methods applied in developed countries.
